The graphics are a little drab but nice enough to suit the game. There is only music, no sound effects. The music is OK. For those used to Mario/Sonic, constantly climbing up and up and up might take a little getting used to. The physics are nicely done and the gaming experience is fun and challenging. Indeed a very unique addition to the platform gaming genre. The controls are slightly awkward. This game has needs more brain power than Mario and Sonic. Overall, the game is well designed.
If you liked Mario, Sonic, and other platform games, this one is well worth a try.
Note: To make a high jump, hold the up arrow and press the space bar.
Reviewer: vinyldude Captain Dynamo is about a pudgy superhero whose goal is to get from the beginning of one level to the end of it. It’s a difficult game in that you cannot be touched whatsoever or you lose a life. This fact does not make Captain Dynamo all that ‘Dynamo’, does it? However, the flapping cape and the bat ears make you root for the guy as he jumps to avoid spikes and weird looking vermin.
I think the music is catchy for this game though with all of the effort put into the theme one would think they would take some time to add sound effects. The graphics and coloring give off a kind of Megaman style, which at least makes it somewhat visually appealing. However, as was the usual for 2-D scrolling action games from the nineties, there isn’t much to do aside from jump around and collect random points from objects.
If one were to play the game, one absolutely needs to know about the different types of jumps that Captain Dynamo can do. That is, there is the usual jump and then there is the high jump. One has to press the ‘up’ and ‘jump’ keys simultaneously to leap higher in the air. This is important, for not long into the first level will one have to jump rather high to continue.
Unfortunately, the only way to beat monsters is to jump on them a la Mario and company. Captain Dynamo’s super power is apparently the ability to use weight to his advantage to squish evil. The gems, diamonds and other shiny things that the Captain picks up are apparently of no offensive use for him, which makes victory a little more difficult. If he could survive more than one hit then this would not be a big deal, but since he can die and thus be sent to the beginning of the level, it is tough going.
Thankfully, the developers thought to add save points amidst their levels so that when Captain Dynamo gets nipped by an electric shock or a stray spike he will revive at the save spot. Tragically, one only gets 2 chances to flub up as one starts with a mere two lives in the game. Think Ikari Warriors without the cheat code and you’ve got yourself a real challenge.
It is a cute game that might have done well with character development in a sequel (a pudgy, awkward looking superhero is pretty cool), but it is mildly entertaining for what it is.
