With primitive text-based graphics and a keyboard-only interface, this remake of Minesweeper (one of the games that comes with Windows) may come across as rather dry and dull. Nonetheless, for those who like using the keyboard to play games, this is a welcome departure from the Windows version of Minesweeper.
For those who don't know what Minesweeper is and/or how to play it, here's how it goes: You start with a map with lots of squares, and your job is to find where the mines are without uncovering them, and to uncover all squares that do not have mines. If you uncover a square and it has a number, that number indicates how many mines are next to that number in the surrounding squares. If you find a square and you think it has a mine, you stick a flag on it.
The annoying things about this game (and also Windows Minesweeper along with every other clone/remake) are that you lose after only one mistake and often you're faced with a 50/50 lucky shot after so much brain work getting you so close to victory.
Worth a try if you are a die-hard Minesweeper fan looking for some variety.
Reviewer: firepaw This is basically a clone of the popular puzzle/strategy game Minesweeper. You are searching for "mines" but without as fancy of a user interface. I recommend checking it out if you are a Minesweeper fanatic like me.
In DOSMine you toggle with the keyboard to the space you would like to interact with and either press "enter" to clear it or "space bar" to mark it as a Mine. DOSMine displays a blue exclamation point as a flagged space. The numbers are displayed in generic DOS font. It doesn't have the clear cut square spaces that original Minesweeper uses which takes some getting used to. The uncleared area just displays red. When you lose, the red disappears and displays all numbers and mines (asterisk). You can customize the number of mines and the space available to search for them as in Minesweeper.
For a die-hard Minesweeper fan, it is definitely worth checking out. I would recommend this over all other Minesweeper clones that I have played (Mine Field, Flagger). Of course for a Minesweeper fan, an original Windows version is always best but there are situations where DOSMine is better, in my opinion. Without a mouse there is no way to play windows Minesweeper, but since you use the keyboard to toggle on DOSMine, it can be played on places like on airplanes, on trains, or in cars. For someone who is --say building their own operating system and think that this would fit better for them it is definitely better. It is considerably smaller than most like it, for those of you without much space/power on your system ,and a lot easier to tweak for those of you who like to mess with computer code.
One of the better clones, I recommend it over Mine Field and Flagger, but obviously if given the choice I would just go with plain old Minesweeper. Of course I am a Windows user and it has always come stock on my computers, but for those of you who might be building an operating system, this could be a good option especially if you want to try to tweak its code.
Give it a try! It is fun to play, and to get the same Minesweeper feel with a different user interface. Sometimes I play DOSMine just for the nostalgic feeling I get from a low-tech interface. It is challenging and will force you to use your logical brain. Download DOSMine (dosmine.zip)
