Two players ride ostriches and try to stab each other with lances, how does that sound? Weird, huh? Well that's what this game is all about, riding an ostrich to stab the opponent. Run, jump, and flap your way to victory!
This is one of the weirdest games I've ever seen. However, this is a classic game found on platforms like the Atari, so if you played old Atari Joust, you may be interested in this game.
Reviewer: Dos-Games-Online Some games are classics from the day they come out, others are just time killers...something to do while waiting for your favorite TV show to come on. Joust is one of those games. Its not a complicated game; it is fun if you like riding around on an ostrich back while ramming into your enemies, who come around on the different platforms that you fly back and forth from. The point system is simplistic, kill difficult enemies, get more points. It actually reminds me of Donkey Kong style play where you have things coming at you from all sides. Though you cannot really "win" the game, you can get the high score, but can only do that by killing everything, which I find rather difficult without the original boost power ups of the first arcade game that this DOS version is based upon... I haven't been able to do it with this PC version. Not to say it impossible, in fact that might be its one redeeming quality. It gives you something to strive for. As the difficulty increases so do point values. There are places all over the Web for posting high scores, proving that this is still a cult classic.
The fact that your using the keyboard makes things a bit difficult a first, especially for those who actually played the arcade game. And you don't have the energy boost button like the original arcade game. So no speed boost power ups either. I have the game on my old computer, Windows 98... and not sure how the graphics would do on the newer computers of today. The graphics were adequate at best when it came out, so for anyone looking for great graphics, this is not the game for you. It has the classic eighties arcade look.
However, if you just need something to play during a boring lecture or to kill time while waiting for friends to come over, then this is it. It's very Donkey Kong in its simplicity, and gives just enough difficulty to keep you busy. You can't win the game, there's nothing to win, no story line. It's just a game that allows you to exercise your hand eye coordination while keeping you mildly entertained. I still have it on my computer, and it can become addictive like solitaire. In its day, it was top of the line and available in every arcade in town.
So all in all, playability is entertaining if you're used to keyboard playing. Replayability is decent, and graphics are okay. I'd recommend it to anyone who is wanting an old game that they're nostaligic for, or for people looking for some stress relief.
