The graphics are very poor; as a result, the game is confusing. This game has deviated so far away from the original board game that it has ruined the simple game formula that made the original Battleship game a success. Overall, this game is a big mess. Sometimes, it's hard to figure out what you're doing.
Even the most avid Battleship fan may have a hard time appreciating this game. For the most part, it's not worth a download.
Reviewer: Brazzle29 Although this game can be a bit confusing, it does have similarities to the original board game. The objective is still the same: you still have different-sized ships, and red means a hit while white is a miss. What's different is that you have more than 5 ships, and you get to shoot more than once per turn (the number of times you shoot is based on how many opponent ships you've already sunk). There are mines that you place at the same time you position your ships. If you place a mine at the same place one of their ships is located, they cancel each other out. If you place it where one of their ships is, it shows red right away (sort of like a peek, to tell you where one of their ships is located before the game even starts). Otherwise, when a shot hits a mine, it ends the turn, so if there is more than one shot per turn and they hit a mine on the first fire, it means they can’t continue. But this concept can work against you too.
As for the actual gameplay, you can use either mouse or keyboard, but I find it much easier to use the mouse, especially at the beginning when you are placing ships. I do use the space bar, though, for changing the ships' orientation between horizontal and vertical when placing them. Clicking places the ship in its current location; it’s the same for placing the mines.
As other players have mentioned, the graphics are somewhat dated, but this is a classic board style game, not a fantasy RPG. That's how DOS games usually are; the graphics were all like that. And unless you're a really good player, it can be quite difficult to beat the computer. Even though it's based on formulas and patterns to play (instead of strategy), the computer still manages to beat me a majority of the time. The only other problem I had with this game is that for some reason, the sound is really loud (I’ve noticed that a few of my DOS games seem to have really loud sound on my computer; this must be due to the original audio settings of the game).
One hint for playing: remember that the shortest ship is 2 squares long, which means it helps to space out your shots a bit -- leave an empty space between clicks, because no ship would fit into one square. And once both destroyers (the 2-square ships) have been found, leave TWO empty squares in between each shot. Doing this means you're not wasting shots and might help you win. Good luck to all who play this game, and hopefully you will enjoy the game. It is a winner for sure. Download Battle Ships (zeeslag.zip)
