Metal gear solid is known as a shining gem for its lush graphics, well done storyline and the admiring characters that will carry on into the future games are truly fantastic. I started playing this game roughly five years ago and it is quite an incredible game.
The story is about a clone soldier named solid snake whose objective is to sneak into a terrorist base to find information on a secret weapon.
The setting is in a cold winter base in Alaska and the base has a sense of mystery making you wonder what is truly in store for you. The game requires you to be stealthy while sneaking past genome guards with enhanced awareness and abilities. If you choose to kill guards your life in the game will be cut very short because yet again the game requires you to sneak past enemies.
The next thing I want to talk about is the sound and voice acting. The music in the game is quite good and it blends with the environment that you’re in. The voice acting throughout the game is actually really good some lines, but does get corny but that doesn’t take out any of the fun in the game.
The gameplay is actually pretty impressive for the time unfortunately there isn’t an interchangeable first person mode like in metal gear solid 2 but it makes it up with the well known item selection screen. Sneaking past enemies in some cases can be hard and in some places can be really easy. One of my favorite sneak mechanisms is a plain box which helps covers you and has a little hole to see if a guard is coming. Most guards won’t be aware that you’re there when you use it. There are ways to distract guards as well such as tranquilizing a guard and directing all the other guards’ attention on that one and adult magazines you can set on the floor.
The stealthy performance you do in this game can determine your ending and/or give you special things once you complete the game. My absolute favorite part of the game is easily the boss battles some are actually impressive requiring you to think in some cases and just be quick in other ways. This boss battle formula precedes in the next couple games and makes you want to pick up the sequels (believe me they’re awesome). This game is probably one of my favorite games ever and is definitely one you want to try. I give it 9.5 out of 10
