BZFlag is a multiplayer 3D tank game. You are in a tank and you have to capture the flag from the opposite team. Your tank is armoured with lasers, which you can use to destroy an enemy. BZFlag is a new flavour in capture the flag games.
BZFlag only has a multiplayer option. Some other multiplayer-only games i found on the internet had allmost no online players, but there are allways some BZFlag freaks online, so you never have to feel lonely when playing this game.
Reviewer: milkywayrocks BZflag is a tank based first person shooter. Graphics can be good depending on what platform you are playing. Because of the open source nature, I believe it is ported to every platform you can imagine.
Gameplay is simple. You steer the tank using a combination of keyboard and mouse. Jumping is optional, some people like to enable it for the added tactical variation, but I stick with no jump all the time. Basic firing is standard slow reloading tank shell. You basically charge each other head one, fire a shoot and manoeuvre your way. Different weapons are scattered through the maps, including the overly power laser, machine gun and target seeking missiles.
Without jump the maps can be drab. However in later versions teleports has been added. They not only teleport tanks but also bullets and lasers. This adds a lot of variation to the game play. Inter-player communication is available as simple text input.
Game play modes are plentiful. The classic free-for-all death match is standard. Capture the flag and team death match are also available.
Although BZflag’s graphics look dated, the game still has an active online community. Regular matches are held over the internet (servers are easy to come by) and there’s an official league called Ducati-Style CTF League. Everything you’ve seen on a modern multiplayer game league can be found over there. Clans, ladders and leader boards are available for you to keep track of your status.
Being open source, user generated content is readily available. A map generation tool is included in most distributions, allowing users to create their own BZflag arenas.
The beauty of the game is in its simplicity and availability on every platform imaginable. The network game play is rock solid. I highly recommend the game if you are in a situation where you can’t find high end computers to play modern FPS and just want a little good old FPS fun with your friends.
