This game is very similar to Space Invaders, Galaga, Galaxian, Kiloblaster, etc. You control a spaceship on the bottom of the screen and your job is to destroy all of the alien ships above you. You need to hit the alien ships more than once to destroy them, unlike most games of this category. Quite a challenge indeed as they pepper you with bullets. Enhancements like power-ups and other stuff make the game a bit more fun.
Compared to most space shooters, this game is fairly hard. You only get one ship, if you lose it, game over. Other than that, this is a decent space shooter.
If you like Space Invader type games, this game is worth a try.
Reviewer: Adinatak I’ve always been a big fan of Galaga and this game just took the basics of that classic and stepped it up a notch. For this genre of game the graphics are quite exceptional, enough to satisfy my tastes. The background is a pretty 2D work of art with planets and stars filling your screen.
The game play is pretty similar to all those other space fighter ones. You are a tiny little ship at the bottom of the screen being assailed by dozens of others, shooting for your life. The part that I found most challenging and invigorating about Avenger was the fact that you have to shoot the ships more than once to take them out. Now this may not seem so exciting to most but it does add a touch of realism. I mean, seriously, unless you hit their engines with every bullet/ray thingy I’m pretty sure you can’t take out a mother ship with a single shot.
Power-ups are everyone’s best friends and there are plenty of them in this game. From shields to your weapon you can pick up all sorts of bad-ass enhancements for your space fighter. And trust me all those boosts come in handy because you’re going to need your ship as tough as possible to withstand the hordes.
While being more interesting and strategic then earlier games of this genre it’s also pretty hard. You get one ship and one ship only. Once you lose your precious vehicle it is game over and back to the starting line for you. The excitement level is higher due to this factor and is a nice touch for those sick of destroying fleets with a dozen lives left; but when you add in the other piece involving having to shoot more than once to kill the enemy ships then it can get fairly frustrating.
All in all, this is a good game and definitely worth checking out if you are a fan of other space ship games like Galaga and Space Invaders. Just remember to grab those power-ups and fire nonstop.
