Most people are fairly familiar with the Lemmings series of computer strategy games. Many of them have even been implemented into the computer systems of modern day schools to help improve logic and problem solving skills in children, just like the Oregon Trail Game in the days of old. Lemmings has tons and tons of spin-offs, clones and fanmade shareware or freeware games available. The Lemmings Xmas 94 game is actually part of a series of Lemmings games, all released around the holiday season, beginning in 1991. Like the other titles in the Lemmings series, Lemmings Xmas 94 is a single player puzzle game that offers many opportunities to try to save the Lemmings using simple tools and sound logic and problems solving strategies.
Lemmings Xmas 94 is the final title in the Lemmings Christmas editions. It also encompasses Lemmings Christmas 93, making it like a “two for one” deal. It was published by Psygnosis and developed by DMA Design. It was made available for many formats, including the Commodore 64, the Amiga, and the Apple systems. It was a holiday favorite, due to the lovable lemmings that many people already adored. The game was retitled Holiday Lemmings X (whatever year) in the United States. The Christmas Lemmings chronicles were unique because the theme of all the levels was a holiday one. Even the enemies took on a wintery scene, and the user could lose lemmings when they were eaten by snowmen or fell through holes in the ice. Like the other games in the series, the user was given a quota at the beginning of each level, and had to make certain that no fewer than that number survived the perilous trek across the level. Some of the lemmings would have to be sacrificed in order to insure the safety of the masses, but the gamer has to be careful not to kill too many, or he will not be able to reach his quota.
Of course, the thing that sets this Lemmings game apart from the others is the nifty winter theme. Unfortunately, it is also the one thing that makes the game somewhat redundant. Since all of the levels are going to have a wintery look, they tend to get repetitive. There is only so much one can do with snow and ice to make it interesting. Still, the puzzles are challenging and the lemmings are cute and ready to die at your command. This is a nice change of pace from the original Lemmings series and will certainly be a great addition to any holiday collection.
