Ace Ventura is one of the most easily recognized characters in the world form the movies Ace Ventura Pet Detective as played by the hilarious Jim Carrey. The movie was given great exposure and recognition, something that is not true for the pc game based on this movie. Ace Ventura was developed and published by 7th Level and is a classic cartoon adventure game very much like Leisure Suit Larry 7 and Curse of Monkey Island with the difference of being much easier than these classic games. This can be seen as a disadvantage for any hard core adventure game player and this is why this game is not targeting customers over a certain age. I would say that this is a great game for people between the ages of 12 and 18. Although Ace Ventura is a foul mouthed character in the movies, the jokes he says in the game are not as obscene so young gamers can play the game without having to hear all that.
The game play is the traditional click and solve style with a lot of hints so potential gamers will not have to worry about getting used to the controls of the game. You can jump right in! The game in itself is fairly smart consisting of puzzles a great plot and even some mild arcade-like action to break the monotony. Between the puzzles and the arcade action there are several cut scenes that unlike many other games like this, are very pleasant and funny so the gamer never gets bored watching them.
The plot of the game is very similar to that of the Ace Ventura Pet Detective movies with Ace trying to find lost animals and bringing them back safe. Playing as Ace is very cool because this way you can enter his world and get a feel of what he is like. The cartoon-like graphics are very stylish and cool and when they are combined with a strong character such as Ace and funny dialogs and punch lines reminiscence of the Ace Ventura movies the outcome is great.
I would rate Ace Ventura with 7 out of 10 and would recommend it to young gamers who are fans of stylish adventure games. The fact is that although most gamers will get through this game fairly easily they will most definitely be very entertained in the process! It is always good seeing loved movies turned into good games instead of games that make people eventually hate the original movie.
