Hugo 1: House of Horrors is the first game in a trilogy. In these adventure games you're playing with Hugo. The first episode is about Hugo's girlfriend which has been kidnapped. She went out to babysit a baby in a haunted house. Your task is to find his girlfriend and to rescue her.

The graphics are not worse but they're not very good. The gameplay is nice, like all old Sierra-games.
Sounds? Well, I don't know if there are any, I don't hear them on my Windows XP computer. Maybe tehy'll work in Windows 98, but I'm not sure.

Hugo’s house of horrors is a great game for lovers of the Hugo series. This is the first one in the series and you begin the game out the front of the house of horrors. Once inside there are many obstacles and items to find that help you progress through the game (there’re also many ways to die so save often). The game has some challenging problems but the experienced gamer should be able to solve them. You have to type to do anything in the game which can be a bit frustrating, especially for bad spellers, and getting the game to do what you want sometimes requires you to write what you want in a different way. One part of the game you have to write what you want to do before you enter the room because if you don’t you’ll be dead before you finish typing.
Knowing a lot about old games and movies would be good because there is a quiz at the end and if you don’t pass it you can’t finish the game but you get multiple tries so that’s a good thing (or you could just search the answers on the internet). It’s a great game and got gamers interested in the next few Hugo games.
There are various clues throughout the house of horrors to help you solve some of the problems you encounter throughout the house. I remember the clue on the bathroom mirror that gives you the combination to the lock in the garage. When first entering the house it doesn’t seem to be too big but every room that you can enter has some purpose in the game. Some of the rooms can take a bit to get through and you better be sure to get what you need from the room because you’ll need it later.
The game isn’t just in the house either, you go under the house but you need to collect some stuff from the house to get you through the underground levels. The underground levels require some luck in getting past the monsters, this is the part of the game where you save after every room you get past because there’re lots of chances to die.
Now the reason why Hugo is even in this house is because he is trying to rescue his beloved girlfriend Penelope. I don’t know how she got kidnapped or anything but that’s the game-makers fault for not telling anyone. There’s one part of the game where you can’t even see the items you have to collect so make sure you tell Hugo to search or look around a room so you can be sure to find all the items you need.
