Chip's Challenge is a puzzle video game that was developed in 1989 by Epyx. Besides the DOS port, it was also available for the Atari Lynx, Atari ST, ZX Spectrum, and Windows.
You play a high-school nerd named Chip. He has met Melinda, a fellow nerd, and wants to be part of her Bit Buster Club. In order to be a member he must go through Melinda’s Clubhouse, which is a series of progressively more difficult puzzles).
There are a whopping 148 levels in Chip’s Challenge. You use the keyboard’s arrow keys or a mouse to move Chip around the levels. When using the mouse you can simply click on the square you want to move Chip to, even if it is many squares away.
The goal of each level is to collect the right amount of chips in order to open the chip socket so you can move to the next level. Yes, you want to complete all levels of the game, but there is another way progress is measured: your score. Some levels are timed, for which your score can improve for completing the level in less time as before. You can improve your score on all levels by completing the level with fewer moves.
There are different kinds of levels, as to their gameplay. Some of the levels involve action, while others include puzzles. Some types of level gameplay include: Chip having to solve a block-pushing puzzle in order to make a path to the level’s exit, Chip dodging enemies to make it to the exit, and Chip making his way through a maze. The first 8 levels are tutorials that help you get the hang of the game. When you move Chip to a square with a question mark on it a hint box will pop up. It will give you suggestions on how to complete each level. After the eighth level, hints are only occasionally given.
Besides trying to complete the levels, you need to keep Chip safe. There are hazards throughout the levels that you need to avoid, such as invisible walls, water traps, bombs, locked doors, and monsters. You will need to find tools that will help Chip unlock those doors, walk over the water, avoid the bombs, etc. The tools will be found on squares, and all you have to do is move Chip to that square to get the tool.
Chip’s Challenge is a game that can be very addictive, as many puzzle solving games can be. This game will definitely prove to be a worthwhile download to those fans of games that test your brain’s skills.
