This is your classic overhead RPG very similar to the likes of Shining Force or the old school Dragon Quest. For those of us that grew up playing RPGs on the original nintendo, Super Nintendo Entertainment System and Sega Genesis, this is one of those games that I'm sure many of us missed during that time. It was about 5 years after its release that I had learned about the game, but from what I saw and experienced early on in the game's progress, I knew I had a sure fire winner here. Even though the game was already at least 5 years old, and much nicer looking games were coming out on the Playstation, it was always the games like this that i remember most fondly. Maybe it was because of the amount of time i spent playing them, or just the joy they brought me, this version of classic RPG will always have a special place in my gamer heart.
The game is quite simple really. A pretty easy to follow story involving the battle between good and evil. Along the way you meet new companions that join you and help you along in your quest. Like many games during this time, similar to the Shining Force series of games, Knights has a turn based fighting system which can either be a thorn in your side or RPG nerd heaven. During your fights, you will gain experience points and "level up" as time goes on. The nice thing about games like this is that you can "farm" your characters enough that the rest of the game should be a piece of cake.
The primitive graphics should not deter anyone from playing this game. Especially if you're going for the nostalgia factor. Of course, graphics alone don't make any game. In this case, the story and the actual fun you'll have while playing the game make it all the worthwhile. It is easy to follow and for the most part you won't have any problems in terms of getting lost in the game. If memory serves me correctly, there's plenty of things to find and places to explore. The game shouldn't take that long of a time to finish. The boss battles, if I remember correctly, were fairly straight forward and didn't have to load my game up and try to beat them on many occasions, if at all. The dialog and ending aren't exactly Oscar quality writing, but it does the job and gives the game a good enough closure.
I would highly recommend this to anyone who loved classic RPGs.
