The automotive carnage of Carmageddon returns madder and badder than ever in the in the Carmageddon series.
In the Carmageddon Splat Pack, you return once again to spin, slip and slide through pedestrians, cows and opponents as you race through an incredible new tracks and new environments. Instead of driving through cities and deserts you are now able to drive through medieval worlds full of knights in shining armor and jesters and even, if you are mad and bad enough, visit the fiery gates of Hell in the lava level.
Reviewer: llamaguy Well, if you have finished the old, and I mean OLD, Carmageddon and are hungry for more, then Sci has heard your call, because they made an expansion pack called Carmageddon Splat Pack. The newest things here are the tracks, which would be a breath of fresh air from the cities. The rules are the same: dominate your opponents by either racing nicely, or obliterating their cars with power-ups, or slamming into them. The favorites are still here, including Screwey Louie.
Keep in mind this game isn't a racing simulator, it is more like a race around the checkpoint whilst dismembering pedestrians going at 200 MPH. The collisions are possibly the funniest part of the game, mainly because it is so unrealistic it shows how you are supposed to think of the game, which is to have fun and trying to beat the clock. Yes, I said clock. In order to keep the clock ticking, you either have to pick up time power-ups, which if I remember, are silver tins, or destroying an opponent’s car, which gets you around 30 seconds to 1 minute.
All power-ups aren't helpful or beneficial towards your goal of ultimate destruction, like jelly suspension, Spiked tail (gives you a huge chain attached with a spiked ball), and the dreadful explosion barrels, which can send you straight up into the air, only to meet the cold, hard pavement at the bottom. There are also helpful power-ups, like one that shoots out explosive mines out the front of your car towards others, the Pedestrian Death Ray (my favorite), and the kangaroo power-up, which can make for some pretty hilarious outcomes.
My only gripe about this game is that you cannot total your car, only get near the total point. Another key thing to remember is that the graphics aren't the best, mainly because the technology wasn't the greatest in 1997. While games these days focus on eye candy, games in that time period focused on the gameplay and fun, which is always good to turn back to after witnessing a game with horrible gameplay.
This game is very similar to Twisted Metal series, the Interstate '76 series, and Breakneck. If you like killing pedestrians with deathcars, or making the most money to upgrade your car to do more damage, then Splat Pack is for you, take my word for it.
