Grand Theft Auto 2 is a crazy action game in which everything is about crime. You can follow the storyline in the game and do some missions, like killing a specific guy or bring a car to some place, but you can also go your own way. Just walk around in the level, get a car and kill innocent pedestrians, get out of the hands of the cops and have fun.
There are three normal levels in GTA 2, which are the cities where you walk in. There are also 9 bonus levels. In these bonus levels it's you goals to drive 3 fast laps on a certain circuit, destroy all the ice-cream fans or kill as much people as you can with a machine gun.
Grand Theft Auto 2 is a really violent game and that's why we don't advise this game to young children.
The download of this game goes via the official Rockstar Games website. They released this game for free in 2004, resulting in a really cool freeware game. You have to fill in some personal data, but as far as I know they don't send you mail or do anything with it, it's just to check if you're old enough.
Reviewer: unmog In my opinion GTA2 is one of the best in the series. Even though there's only three levels, these levels are MASSIVE, filled not only with an insane amount of collectibles to discover, an unlimited amount of chaos and excitement you can cause but also different gangs to interact with which in turn give you more missions you can do for them when you earn enough respect with them. This gives you a nice combination of storyline game play and self inspired randomness to keep you busy with a single level far into the night. Even though it’s not a multiplayer game in and of itself, one of the favorite things my friends and I would do is hand over the controller when busted or killed, each trying to outlast the other. Other than the different storylines, which you can do more than one gang at a time, to simple things like exploring the city or better arming/upgrading yourself and the occasional chaotic murdering rampages and police chases, this “oldie but goody” is more like how the creators should have kept the GTA franchise. I find the newer games comparably dull in comparison, despite the beautiful 3D graphics.
Graphics 8/10
Now onto graphics. I enjoyed the graphics, and I played the PS version of the game, though I heard it was much better on the computer. The camera perspective is of a bird's eye view, meaning you see everything almost directly above you. The game isn’t 3D like most newer games, but for coming out in 1999 a lot of games back then weren’t 3D either. Everything seemed nice enough, though the graphics are admittingly simple even for its time. If you’re interested in oldschool feel for games though it’s very nicely done.
Sound 10/10
The sound was amazing as far as I’m concerned, though it would have been nice to have some sort of option for background music when you’re not inside a car. When you do hop into a car, however, you’re instantly hooked up with the car radio which gives several different options for radio stations you might want to listen to. Each station has a different genre of music, as well as a different radio host who are often times hilarious. My favorite station was actually the religious one, since it had the craziest radio host and they were the most entertaining to listen to, however all the stations had a very good quality of music to listen to for different moods you’re playing in. Everything from carjacking someone and being called a bad name to the satisfying splat of running over a line of Elvis impersonators was pleasing to me.
Gameplay 9/10
The objective of the game is, basically, to amass as much money as humanely possible. You do this by committing crimes and completing quests. Once you’ve made enough it lets you advance to the next level whenever you choose by heading back to the church. You also can save your progress at a church. I have no idea why it’s a church specifically… I don’t think it’s you’re secret base or anything so asinine, and I’m pretty sure the character isn’t repenting for his crimes. Sometimes finding a church can be hard though, the easiest way to do this (other than using the map that comes with the game since I don’t think you get one with the PC downloaded version) is to hijack a tv news van and follow where the antenna on the top points to. As you get to new levels the difficulty of the police also get higher, and at the third level you can go up against the military. On a side note, the tank is hilariously fun to abuse. My only real problem with the game is the sluggish performance I described in the graphics section I already spoke of and the problem with driving up and down hills… specifically, driving a tank over a car while on a hill. I’ve heard people say the game is too much like the original, but I disagree. I had a lot more fun with the second than the first, and I’ve revisited it countless times. It isn’t completely different either of course, but if it was then it wouldn’t be GTA2. Regardless, the game is very fun, a true classic for the playstation and anyone craving a no holds barred style game of violence and chaos.
Replayability 8/10
Like I mentioned above, the game is fun to come back to. In that sense, the game is more a game that changes according to your mood and the missions and storyline can also take turns depending on your choices. However the repetitive quality, despite the massive levels and overall fun of the game leaves it for just that. Still anytime you feel like playing it again the game is almost guaranteed to be fun if you’re in the mood for it.
Reviewer: libra22 Grand Theft Auto 2 (or GTA2) is one of the best games released by Rockstar Games in the 90's. The game is a sequel of the first Grand Theft Auto which didn't get as much attention, but which was itself a great gaming experience.
The game presents you with a "far-view-from-above" style of gaming which was a great decision, for the games of that time didn't have the great graphic engines of today. As far as graphics go, this game was a solid breaktrough. Although developed very late for it's genre (1999, the Blood 2 and Half Life engines were already fresh out of the kitchen) the game presents us with great explosions, smooth textures even at high resolutions and even blood and gore.
You go through the cool design menu and you start a new game - you become a normal, regular, not so out of the ordinary guy (three milimeters tall normal guy). At first you won't have anything to defend yourself with but your fists, which are very effective against regular pedestrians (K.O. in one punch, although you'll never be able to kill someone by punching them). If you wanna go a bit Carmaggedon on the poor little pedestrians, just steal a car....any car. You can either steal a parked car or go for the thrilling "get-out-of-the-rolling-car-bitch" type of thievery (which is always a favorite).
While you go on about your business killing pedestrians you'll be bothered (haven't we all) by the pesky policemen. You can knock'em down and run them over, but you'll never get them all. The more you kill, the more you get on your tail, and the better equipped they are, until finaly you'll have the military on your ass and...well...that's about it. The military clears the streets of pedestrians and blocks the roads with tanks. It's fun to "try" and get away, but the only option there is to die.
But this is only the surface of the game...the fingernail scratched surface. Once you understand the game you'll realize that there are three factions in each of the three cities you have to go through to finish the game. Joining the factions is actualy the campaign side of the game. You'll get missions such as blowing up human-meat processing factories and stealing tanks from the military, killing the head of some other faction or just some good old plain robberies.
There are so many weapons ranging from pistols to tesla guns that I doubt I remember them all. And when talking about cars...well, it's not called Grand Theft AUTO for nothin'! There are around 50 or more types of cars from which to choose from, from Miata's to pick-up trucks and from school buses to ambulances.
The great diversity of weapons, cars and missions that are available in this game make it one of the best (if not THE BEST) of it's genre. Even after finishing the game (several times) you'll still have fun accessing it's shortcut and playing it for hours on end.
But the greatest GTA2 experience, from my point of view is the multiplayer one. Get 4 of your buddies up on a LAN or Internet connection and that's where the carnage really kicks in. Think about tank races, machine gun stand offs and military survival mode (who can stand the longest when they come round). OH YEAH!!!...that's when the fun begins.
So all in all, I really don't have any bad mouthing to do about this game. Even though it got "old" very soon as new games turned up, it remains a classic and a great experience any time, any place, even though you could probably play it on a portable console now'a'days.
