Educational software magazines awarded Donald Duck's Playground several times with the title Educational Game of the Year. You are Donald Duck and you have to earn money working on four different jobs. In the end, you can buy playground equipment for your nephews with the money you earned.
The four jobs you have to work at are guiding the train to the station, sorting out fruit, sorting out toys at the toy store and sorting out luggage at the airport.
Al Lowe, one of the producers of this game, released this game along with some others as freeware. He wrote at his website: "As far as I know, these games are no longer of any interest to my friends at Disney or Sierra, so feel free to copy them and share them with your friends."
Reviewer: Dos-Games-Online This game is not a game as such... it's an educational tool. The game itself is over 20 years old and was made by US Gold/ Sierra online, it was actually meant to be a Commodore 64 only title, but it was converted to other formats. The game itself is rather simplistic and falls in line with similar titles years later like the 'freddy fish' series of edutainment games. Where the players learn various things, such as eye co-ordination and maths. I played this way back in the 80's, a bit after the 1986 release date, it was on our computers at school and some of our term assessments involved playing this game and getting things right, not only that but whoever gets the most tasks correct won a prize. And back then kids got excited about any little prize regardless of what it was, I was no different.
The game is centered around donald duck and his ability to perform tasks correctly at various jobs given to him and if done correctly, he gets paid a certain amount. For example at the airport he has to correctly sort luggage and for his efforts gets a couple of cents, this helps the player with eye co-ordination, alertness and being on the ball. The same thing applies at the local green grocer, donald duck has to sort the various fruits into the corresponding areas, much like the airport, he gets a couple of cents for his efforts, but some jobs gets more. At the toy store for example he has to sort toys coming to him on the conveyor belt and put them on their right shelves, for each toy sorted correctly he gets a few more cents than his previous jobs and so on. There is also the railroad where donald can pocket himself quite a bit for his efforts. The reason why it's called donald ducks playground is that all the money he earns, goes towards playground equipment for his three nephews.
The controls are responsive and easy to master. The graphics are colorful and very simplistic, and not too harsh on the eyes. The sound and audio is cute, clear, and easy to understand. A must have game especially for the education value. Download Donald Duck's Playground - ddplayground.zip
