A bunch of aliens have supposedly created a control center in the earth's core, and your job is to get down there and destroy it.

You control a ship, and you are falling down deep into the earth, trying to avoid destruction. Get coins and shields to help you along your way.

Quite a simple game as your ship moves from left to right, depending on your reflexes and reaction time to avoid colliding with the walls and red squares while trying to get the coins and shields.

Enjoyable game for those who like the classic style arcade game.

I picked up Deep II the other day off of my brother's old DOS collection. After playing it for half an hour or so, the system started to get frustrating because this old game was kicking my butt.

The premise of Deep II is that you are some kind of a glorified start ship captain making his descent into the looming deep of the earth. According to the loose explanation included with the game, a group of mischievous aliens have established a command center at the earth's core, and it is your mission to infiltrate the opaque deep beneath you, and take them out. An ominous and elaborate mission, one might think, but in reality the game is a simple Atari-esque romp.
The gameplay was a tad slow paced for me, yet at the same time challenging and difficult. As you descend further into the earth, the game speeds up, pathways grow narrower and enemies appear from all directions. The gameplay is simple, but difficult. I found that It takes a very long time to master the game.

I found myself replaying the same areas over and over again, becoming quickly frustrated by the mechanics. Despite this, the game boils down to left and right and avoiding the various rising enemies, walls and other obstructions. Some minor power ups help you along your way, namely coins and other minor score items. The power ups don't give long lasting assistance, however, so the gamer better get used to relying on his own wits and reflexes. Along your way you can collect coins that help you to get high score (quite a feat in this rather difficult game), and avoid the nondescipt red boxes that litter the desolate pit as your descend. Colliding with said boxes will result in your doom- and in a game lacking save points, this is quite the let down. As something of a safety net, you are given three lives. No health. Each time you take a hit, crash into a wall, or vice-versa, you lose a life and simply re spawn where you were. Losing all three of your precious lives results in a good deal of anger and language, at least on my part.

All and all, though, despite the simplicity of the game and it's tooth-grinding difficulty, Deep II isn't all bad. For fans of the retro scene, Deep II could be worth a look; Just don't expect to get far on your first try. This is way to "deep of a game for that!
