Blood has been made with the Build 3D Engine, which is also used to make Duke Nukem 3D. As you might expect from a game called Blood, you will see a lot of blood when you kill an enemy. It took me a while to find out how to jump, but after trying a while I found out that you can jump by pressing "A".

The gameplay is really good.
In some DOS 3D Shooters you can't look up and down, but in Blood you can do that by pressing PageUp/PageDown or KeyPad9/KeyPad3. Gamers who enjoyed Duke Nukem 3D and other 3D Shooters will like this game too.

Blood is a corridor first-person shooter that falls in line as Doom, Duke Nukem and Quake with one twist: gore! Staying true to its title, Blood is a non-stop splatter-fest from the opening scene to the final showdown with Tchernobog. Blood and gore is the selling point of Blood, and boy do they deliver, and then some! Enemies are burned alive, dismembered, blown to pieces, crushed and gush fountains of blood from every bullet wound. Blood-curdling screams of “IT BURNS!”, playing soccer with dismembered heads and walls covered in pulsating and oozing flesh only add to the gory ambiance of this game. The amount of gore is so over the top that it becomes ridiculously silly the further you proceed in the game.
The gore is well paired with the ambiance music that reminds you of the campy horror movies of the 80’s. As does (the main character) Caleb’s well timed one liners and references to horror movies such as Friday the 13th, Jaws, Evil Dead and other cult classics. Caleb delivers his quips in a chiselled Clint Eastwood voice that puts Duke Nukem’s voice to shame.
Blood’s premise is simple: you are Caleb, virtuous gun slinger. Coaxed into a cult worshiping Tchernobog by a beautiful woman, their idol had a change of heart and killed all his followers including his love. You are resurrected in the 1940’s by cult members and seek revenge on Tchernobog who also has been reawakened. Standing in your path are throngs of zombies, gargoyles, minions, spiders and simple key collecting puzzles.
You have an array of weapons at your disposal, ranging from the standard Double-Barrel Shotgun, Tommy Gun, and Flare Gun to non-traditional weapons like Dynamite, Hairspray and Lighter, and a Voodoo Doll. Adding to your arsenal are a Tesla Cannon, Life Leech, and a Napalm Launcher. What makes these weapons unique is that most have a separate fire mode: dual-wield Flare Gun, igniting Hairspray can and tossing it like a Molotov Cocktail, and a timer/remote detonate/fuse option for the dynamite, and others.
The learning curve is very high for Blood. The enemies are non-stop and swarm at high speeds wielding an array of weapons and groans that alert you to their presence. You need to keep moving to avoid being trapped in a corridor flanked by enemies. The AI for Blood is indeed intelligent; using walls as cover and attacking from different directions rather than just running blindly at you.
Visually, Blood is not high in the ratings. A dull colour palate and repetitiveness within each level make it seem like you are running in circles and you will get lost if not attentive. At an average distance creatures look normal but become very pixilated and blurry the closer they get, becoming almost a blob of pixels when in your face. Likewise, at a far distance trying to snipe an enemy becomes more on a trial and error than actual aiming and shooting.
Blood’s audio is very rich with crisp sound effects for each weapon and moaning from undead creatures. Caleb’s quips and laughter at the blood fountains that are creatures breaks the droning of the ambiance music that is both creepy and foreboding.
All in all, Blood is a hit. Although using gratuitous gore to get your attention, the difficulty of the easiest setting keeps you wanting to master it and move to the higher settings. What more could you ask for in a great game? Gratuitous gore, campy humour, creepy music, large weapon selection and of course, Caleb’s chiselled voice delivering what is the best quips in any corridor first-person shooter.
