Although Alone in the Dark was made in 1992, it has very good 3D graphics. They make the game run a bit slower, but you can power it up in DOSbox. This is just a limited playable demo but it gives a nice touch of the game.

When the game starts, you will first have to walk around a bit. After a while a monster will come in the room (see the screenshot) and it will try to kill you.
It will kill you if you don't fight back. You can walk in just one room, so you might like to buy the full game if you like the demo version.

The gameplay is good, it made me think of Monkey Island 4 although that game was published a couple of years after Alone in the Dark. Anyway, you might like to try this game, it's nice to play for a while.

This game may have been made way back in 1992, but its introduction started the trend of what is now called 'survival horror', despite what people say about its all too worthy rival, Resident Evil. While it is not the most realistic, which is a given considering the year. It is still one of the best drawn and classic games that everyone from that year will be sure to remember, reflected in the fact that many more, modern, versions have been brought out on various platforms.
In this game you are given the choice to play either a man or a woman, a feature adopted in many a game now, no doubt due to the constant sexist complaints claiming that games such as this always seem to be male orientated. The man, known as Carnby or 'The Reptile' is sent to a eerie, mysterious mansion called Derceto to retrieve an ancient piano thought to be worth 'a few bob'. A motive that seems to be put into contrast with the Woman, Emily Hartwood, as she is visiting her uncles mansion (Jeremy Hartwood) to investigate why he committed suicide.
As we are living in the modern technological age it can be very much argued that the graphics on this game are extremely obsolete, with stiff images and somewhat unbelievable monsters, but believe it or not this was all actually good for its time, and despite the fact that any gamer can be put off by a hand drawn game simply because 'it can't be as realistic!' the images in this are often so well drawn that it will have you biting you nails and hesitating to turn corners.
The music in this game as well is another point worth mentioning, again I am aware that this is common occurrence in games now, but back then it seemed quite clever to be able to change the music in relation to the atmosphere of the scene; for example, while you are walking down a corridor in darkness you may be enticed while hearing an eerie tune as a result maintain suspense between you and the screen or suddenly you are being chased through a window and you have a fast-paced, action tune to match. However the zombie noises seem to be mismatched with that of something that would actually make a monstrous roaring which can create a hiccup in the authenticity of the gameplay!
Finally we have the controls, now despite the complicated controls that we can often have, creating much more unneeded tension for a horror game the controls for Alone in the Dark are relatively easy to use.
If you want a great horror game, pick this one.
