DOOM is one of the best DOS 3D shooters ever made. When id Software released it, it was an immediate hit. A lot of people played the full version, but the version you can download here is the shareware.

The intention of the game is very simple. Walk around, shoot the enemies and walk to the exit. The exit is behind a special door. When you stand before the door, press the spacebar on your keyboard.
The door will open and you can walk into a small room. There's a switch on the wall. Walk to it, press spacebar again and you finished the level.

The graphics are a bit pixelled sometimes, especially when an enemy walk close to you. But, the gameplay and the story of this game are very good. If you played Duke Nukem 3D and some other 3D shooters and you liked it, you should also try this game.

Doom is one of the gaming world's most important classic games, and here's why:
Technology - Doom revolutionized the way the PC brought 3d worlds to life. Build up upon the Wolfenstein 3D platform, Doom included detailed level textures, an array of special effects, including the ever fun exploding barrels, and even dynamic lighting! The other revolutionary feat in the code was the ability to render rooms with walls at any angle and stairs.
AI - This game also present user with something, they might not have previously considered: the enemies can make decisions. Sometimes, if two monsters of different species are attacking you, one will decide, it's a good idea to attack the other one. Then the two of them will start killing each other! A good strategy is often to let a room of baddies tear themselves apart, while you sit back and enjoy the horror show.
Atmosphere - Doom defined what a horror video game was all about. You can enter a room and find the light switch off. Before you know it, tons of horrible monsters or zombies are on the attack! The game also ends each of its three episodes with climatic battles.
Gameplay - Doom did all of these things and more - it was incredibly fun to play! So, many times an Imp or Demon would rise out of nowhere on the attack, and yet the player can easily blast them to bits of guts by shooting the conveniently placed exploding barrel right on either side of them! The levels are set out masterfully, often employing keys and other tidbits, as a way of setting up large mazes and 3d puzzles.
In any case, Doom is one of the most important games in video game history.
