The graphics are close enough to the authentic Nintendo version. If you remember Super Mario 3 for the old Nintendo, this will look familiar. If you don't like PC speaker sounds, the sound in this game may irritate you. While fun for the first few levels, it may get repetitive after a while since almost all you're doing is killing animals and taking coins level after level. The gameplay variation is too little.

If you're curious, this game is worth a try. But for most, it will only provide a few minutes of fun before it gets boring.

The first time I played "Mario Brothers VGA" was some years ago when I was around six-years old. It was an extremely challenging game, looking back on it, I have no idea why! It is a very simple, basic concept in that level after level is bumping small creatures onto their back and then running into them to send them on their way. If simplistic concepts are your idea of a good game then there's every chance that you will thoroughly enjoy this game because that is all this game is. Think Pac-Man meets Super Mario, yet, not as good as either, but a combo of each.

The graphics are resemblant of the early Mario games on Nintendo's platforms, which is one of the elements I actually enjoyed of this game. It is a nostalgic journey back to the golden age of the NES and is pleasing to once again see very jagged edges, pixelated characters and limited colours.

GRAPHICS: 7/10

The sound is again something else which I enjoyed (probably as much as the graphics). It is similar to the graphics in that it rolls back the clock to the time when 8-bit sound was the norm. Typical Mario style sounds such as the coin collection sound effect; the jump sound effect and the sound of a perishing Mario bring back memories of my gaming childhood, which is always a bonus in a game. The music is fairly uninspiring however. The quality, though not brilliant, will suffice and in a way the slightly poor quality is quite a welcome trait for such an antique game.

SOUND: 7/10

As is described in the synopsis of the game it is "fun for the first few levels" however, there is not as much variationin the levels as I would have liked. The waves of enemies don't differ too much from level to level. The enemies do increase in difficulty, but, the artificial intelligence is near enough non-existent. They seem very linear in action and can be fairly easily avoided, even the "hard" enemies with various different abilities, such as jumping, are easily avoided with skill and patience. The "POW" block is a disappointing element as it only seems to serve as making a basic, fairly easy game; easier. This would be a great game for a younger gamer, but seasoned Mario buffs will breeze through it.

GAME PLAY: 8/10 (for the young)

In conclusion, this game is a decent time-killer when you might have a spare 10 or 20 minutes on your hands, but, much longer and you'll find yourself distinctly bored. As stated above, it is best served for a younger gamer who is learning the ropes of one of the gaming world's most notable franchises.
