The graphics are lousy. The sound is not too great. This is a flight simulator, you try to shoot down enemy planes. The flashing clouds may be irritating and the jerky movement is also bothersome.
Don't download this, I doubt you would like it at all.
Reviewer: Dos-Games-Online The game is a basic flight simulator the game is not that bad but the graphics are extremely primitive
But them again it's made for the Atari 7800.what you do is complete a series of missions for example dogflighting and bombing u-boats and more.
The controls are pretty sluggish and its kind of difficult to keep your plane level, but what is cool about the game is you can load up your plane with what you want you can choose the amount of missiles, bullets, and fuel canisters you'll take along.
You can view the plane in four different ways cockpit, leftwing, rightwing, and bomb bay and they all play parts in the game.
When playing the game you usually hear bullets wizzling by you, which is a nice sound effect.
The gameplay in this game was entertaining and fun I think you will get maybe one to one and a half hours of fun at a time.
Overall, this game is a great, if you are fan of an Atari 7800 games. I think you should definitely try this one.
Reviewer: Dos-Games-Online The computer adaption of the popular board game that simulated one to one dogfights in World War One Era aircraft, this early flight game was an innovative and popular example of the genre.
The board game featured a series of books where each player, operating from the cockpit of their aircraft, would select a specific manoeuvre, the selection of which would dictate which page their opponent would then turn to in the manual...the reaction to manoeuvre would then be provided by the opponent...and hours of enjoyment would result.
The computer version captures the essential aim of the original board game, i.e., manoeuvre your opponent into your plane's gun sight, and shoot them down. The actual computerized game is a hybrid between a flight simulator and an action/combat scenario game. Thus one must learn to actually "fly" the aircraft, as well as engage in dogfights with enemy aircraft and the performance of strategic missions.
For its time, the graphics utilized were state of the art, and the action was exciting. Compared with other games available at the time of its release, Aces of Aces was renowned for it's realism and attention to detail.
Although clumsy by modern standards, in it's day the game was somewhat complicated and took some time to master. The switching between the map view and the cockpit scenes often resulted in the plane being flown in the complete wrong direction.....and woe be the poor pilot who happens to get his compass blown up during combat...which at the end of the day is probably a realistic depiction of what did happen in real life to such an unfortunate pilot.
One measure today of how popular a game is relates to the number of "cheats" one finds posted online for the game. In that regard, although limited, the only cheat this author knows of enables the player to enjoy the game while having unlimited lives...the cheat code won't be posted in this review...but knowledgeable gamers should be able to find the cheat code via an online search easily.
Bottom line, considering the time period in which it was released, and the level of graphics found in its competitors, the game Ace of Aces competed, and compared very well with it's competition. In many respects the game was ground breaking...it bridged the gap between board game and computerized version well...it employed a decent, for its time, flight simulator...and perhaps more importantly...it stood the test of time...and spawned many further releases within the genre.
All together, Ace of Aces has a proud place in the pantheon of Air Combat computer games....and deserves to be remembered...and still played today.
